Ready, Set, Robot!

Build Arduino Robots is the second Learn Robotics Alpha course that is designed to teach beginners the fundamentals of robotics. Students who took Arduino for Beginners will apply previous skills to interface mechanics with electronics and code.

At the end of this course, you will be able to configure motor controllers, write embedded programs, and develop logic to control robots autonomously.

Gain Tech Skills by Building Robots!

What You’ll Learn

Develop a Custom Robot

There are a ton of robotics kits you can buy where 99% of the programming and configuration is done for you.

In this course, you’ll learn the fundamental components of a robot, source these components, and build, wire, and program everything from scratch.

The coolest part about this class is that you’ll get real experience solving challenges with autonomous robots.

Write Motor Controller Code

Motor control is a critical part of robotics. But how do motor controllers work? How do you interface a mechanism with an electrical system?

In this course, we’ll guide you through the process of interpreting motor controller datasheets so that you can add autonomy to your robot.

P.S. This skill isn’t just useful for building hobby robotics. Interpreting datasheets and using motor controllers is a highly valuable skill for those of you looking to get into the field of automation engineering.

Reuse Code Like a Programmer

Let’s face it. Programmers are lazy. Why calculate things manually when you can do it automatically? I’ll show you the tricks for reusing and deciphering data to make decisions automatically. Save yourself time and automate the process!

How Parents use Learn Robotics

“I wanted to say again how appreciative I am that I found your site. My kids have always been excited about robotics, but after their early experience with drag-and-drop, we couldn’t find a deeper yet straightforward tutorial on robotics engineering and coding to take them to the next level. LR has finally taken them to that next level. Thank you!”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the LR Alpha Series?

The LR Alpha Series is a collection of robotics courses that provides a roadmap for learning. This course, Build Arduino Robots, is the second course in the series. We recommend starting with Arduino for Beginners, before taking Build Arduino Robots. We want to ensure you have the fundamentals of writing sketches, interfacing hardware with software, and understanding the basics before diving into robotics. The LR Alpha Series has its own robotics kit, LR Alpha Kit, which has all of the components you need to complete both LR Alpha Series courses.

What if I already know Arduino? Do I need to take this course?

If you already have a strong foundation in Arduino and have built Robots from the component level, start to finish, you do not need to take this course. If any of those topics are fuzzy or unfamiliar to you, you’re welcome to join! This course is designed for beginners (or as a refresher) so that you can build robots on your own.

Do I need anything for the course?

Yes, we recommend getting an Arduino kit for this course. You can purchase the LR Alpha Kit which contains all of the components you need for this course and our first course, Arduino for Beginners.

How difficult is the material to learn?

We won’t sugar-coat this: Learning technical skills is challenging.

However, if you’re determined to review the material and enjoy learning new things, we’ve designed the course to be digestible for even the beginner of beginners.

If you have questions at any point during the course, we’re here to help you.

How long do I have access to the course?

You have 100% Lifetime access to the course. We also don’t impose a time limit on how long you have to complete the course.

If I'm older, can I really learn this stuff?

The content is designed for beginners of all ages, with or without any experience with coding or electronics.

If you have basic computer experience (downloading files, typing, installing programs) and a desire to learn Arduino, then this course is for you!

How long does it take to complete the course?

The course is self-serve, so it really depends on how fast you learn the material and how much time you put into it.

I’ve seen students complete the course in as little as 2 weeks.

Most students spend roughly 1-2 hours working on the course per week.

Do I get a certificate for completing the course?

Yes. After you complete the coursework and score an 80% or better on the final quiz, you’ll be rewarded a Course Certificate.

Who teaches the course?

The instructor for the course is Liz Miller, a Robotics Engineer. Her experience spans tenures at UPenn GRASP Lab, MIT Robotics Prep courses, and Engineering work for United Technologies Corporation.

Liz is also the creator of Learn Robotics and has extensive industry experience writing controls code for a variety of Industrial Automation equipment.

She’s also taught robotics to hundreds of students in person and thousands of students around the globe.

I have a technical question about my specific project. Will you help me?

We are happy to help you with any questions you have about the lessons or course work.

Custom project support is not included in the course. We offer individual consultations booked by the hour if you need assistance with your specific device.
